Aries and Capricorn

How Aries and Capricorn relate in astrology's oldest systematic scheme, the facts behind it, and what two people might make of it.

Square

Aries and Capricorn sit three signs apart: a square. Ptolemy counts the square as disharmonious, because it joins signs of different kinds, one yang and one yin.

What Aries and Capricorn can make of it

How you meet

Both Aries and Capricorn are cardinal signs — the ones that start things — though you sit three signs apart, a square, the angle Ptolemy counted as disharmonious. Mars, ruling Aries, is exalted in Capricorn: a placement where it works at its most disciplined. One of you moves fast and outward, the other builds to last, and that contrast often registers as respect.

Where it rubs

Three signs apart, Aries and Capricorn form a square, which Ptolemy calls disharmonious because it joins a yang fire sign with a yin earth sign. Saturn, ruling Capricorn, is in fall in Aries: caution can feel like a brake, urgency like recklessness. You can treat that as friction to argue over, or as timing information to trade.

Day to day

Day to day, the Aries pace wants to begin now and the Capricorn pace wants the structure to hold afterwards — a rhythm that works when both get named aloud rather than assumed. Shared ground is usually effort: neither sign respects coasting. Worth asking each other: which of us is carrying the deadline, and which the first move?

How we read this

This page uses the oldest systematic account of how signs relate: Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, book I, chapters 13 to 16 (2nd century). It covers the four aspects, the commanding and beholding pairs, and the disjunct signs. Ptolemy's reasons are astronomical (equal rising times, equal day lengths), so we read the commanding pairs as mirror images across an equinox and the beholding pairs across a solstice; Robbins's translation reads the mirror point as a sign instead. We give no score: a pairing of signs is a symbolic geometry, not a measurement.

What the evidence says

Large studies have tested whether sign pairings predict who marries or divorces. A study of Swedish population registers (Helgertz and Scott, 2020) and one of about ten million couples in the 2001 census of England and Wales (Voas, 2007) found no effect. Read this page as a way to talk about a relationship, not a forecast of it.
