Aries and Pisces

How Aries and Pisces relate in astrology's oldest systematic scheme, the facts behind it, and what two people might make of it.

Neighbours, with a classical link

Aries and Pisces sit next to each other, one sign apart. That is not one of Ptolemy's four aspects.

They are also linked as commanding and obeying: mirror images across an equinox, they take equal time to rise. Aries, in the half of the year with the longer days, commands.

Traditional rulers. Essential dignity is the tradition's measure of how comfortable a planet is in a sign.

What Aries and Pisces can make of it

How you meet

Side by side in the zodiac, Aries and Pisces share a border but no classical aspect — Ptolemy counted only four, and neighbours aren't among them. What draws you is contrast: cardinal fire that starts things, mutable water that senses them. Aries names the want out loud; Pisces feels the weather around it. Each finds in the other a sense the other lacks.

Where it rubs

Ptolemy paired Aries and Pisces as commanding and obeying — equal rising times mirrored across the equinox, with the longer-day sign given the lead. That old hierarchy can harden into habit: one deciding, one absorbing. Or you can treat it as a role you hand back and forth, asking whose turn it is to set the pace this time.

Day to day

Day to day, Aries' outgoing fire and Pisces' receptive water make an odd, workable rhythm: quick starts, slow soaking-in. Mars, ruling Aries, and Jupiter, ruling Pisces, are neither strengthened nor weakened in each other's sign, so nothing is prescribed — you build the terms. So ask: when I move fast, does that feel like momentum, or like being left behind?

How we read this

This page uses the oldest systematic account of how signs relate: Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, book I, chapters 13 to 16 (2nd century). It covers the four aspects, the commanding and beholding pairs, and the disjunct signs. Ptolemy's reasons are astronomical (equal rising times, equal day lengths), so we read the commanding pairs as mirror images across an equinox and the beholding pairs across a solstice; Robbins's translation reads the mirror point as a sign instead. We give no score: a pairing of signs is a symbolic geometry, not a measurement.

What the evidence says

Large studies have tested whether sign pairings predict who marries or divorces. A study of Swedish population registers (Helgertz and Scott, 2020) and one of about ten million couples in the 2001 census of England and Wales (Voas, 2007) found no effect. Read this page as a way to talk about a relationship, not a forecast of it.
