Capricorn and Aquarius

How Capricorn and Aquarius relate in astrology's oldest systematic scheme, the facts behind it, and what two people might make of it.

Neighbours, disjunct

Capricorn and Aquarius sit next to each other, one sign apart. That is not one of Ptolemy's four aspects.

Ptolemy calls such signs disjunct, or alien: with no aspect and no other link between them, they are said not to see each other.

Later tradition

Later tradition, not Ptolemy, adds that both signs are ruled by Saturn.

What Capricorn and Aquarius can make of it

How you meet

You sit side by side in the zodiac, one sign apart — no aspect at all in Ptolemy's scheme, which calls such neighbours disjunct, as if you don't quite see each other. Yet later tradition gives both signs one ruler, Saturn. Your draw is often a shared seriousness: Capricorn as cardinal earth, initiating and building; Aquarius as fixed air, holding steady to a principle.

Where it rubs

Capricorn's yin, receptive earth wants the next concrete step; Aquarius's yang, outgoing air wants the idea to stay intact. With no classical aspect between neighbouring signs, there's no ready-made channel — you each have to say your reasoning aloud. Both signs answer to Saturn — Aquarius's traditional ruler — so friction here is two disciplines not yet fluent in each other.

Day to day

Daily life tends to run on two clocks: one pacing toward a result, one circling a question until it holds. Saturn is in rulership in both Capricorn and Aquarius, so you share a tolerance for long effort, if not the same object. The useful question between you: what is each of us being loyal to — the plan, or the principle behind it?

How we read this

This page uses the oldest systematic account of how signs relate: Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, book I, chapters 13 to 16 (2nd century). It covers the four aspects, the commanding and beholding pairs, and the disjunct signs. Ptolemy's reasons are astronomical (equal rising times, equal day lengths), so we read the commanding pairs as mirror images across an equinox and the beholding pairs across a solstice; Robbins's translation reads the mirror point as a sign instead. We give no score: a pairing of signs is a symbolic geometry, not a measurement.

What the evidence says

Large studies have tested whether sign pairings predict who marries or divorces. A study of Swedish population registers (Helgertz and Scott, 2020) and one of about ten million couples in the 2001 census of England and Wales (Voas, 2007) found no effect. Read this page as a way to talk about a relationship, not a forecast of it.
