Moon sign calculator
Enter your birth date and place; the time is optional. The Moon spends two to two and a half days in each sign, so the date usually settles it. When the Moon changed sign that day, we show the minute it did.
How the Moon sign works
The Moon moves through the zodiac about thirteen times faster than the Sun, 12° to 15° a day. It spends two to two and a half days in each sign, so on a little under half of all days (44% from 1900 to 2050) it changes sign at some point.
That is why most Moon sign calculators either ask for a birth time or show you two signs. We look up the minute the Moon entered the next sign, in your birthplace's local time, so the date, or the date and a rough time, is often enough.
The time zone matters too: a change at 1 a.m. in London was still the previous evening in New York. We use the time zone rules in force at your birthplace on that date, daylight saving included.
How this is computed
Each change is the moment the Moon's ecliptic longitude crosses from one sign into the next. Our engine computes all 24,251 changes from 1900 to 2050, and every one agrees with Swiss Ephemeris outputs within 21 seconds; we print the nearest minute. Astrology is a symbolic language, not a science: this calculator is exact about the astronomy and the calendar.
