Scorpio and Capricorn
How Scorpio and Capricorn relate in astrology's oldest systematic scheme, the facts behind it, and what two people might make of it.
Sextile
Scorpio and Capricorn sit two signs apart: a sextile. Ptolemy counts the sextile as harmonious, because it joins signs of the same kind, both yang or both yin.
Source: Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos, book I, chapter 13.
The two signs
| Scorpio | Capricorn | |
|---|---|---|
| Element | Water | Earth |
| Modality | Fixed | Cardinal |
| Polarity | Yin: inward, receptive | Yin: inward, receptive |
| Ruler | Mars (traditional), Pluto (modern) | Saturn |
Each ruler in the other's sign
Mars, ruler of Scorpio, in Capricorn: exalted.
Saturn, ruler of Capricorn, in Scorpio: no essential dignity.
Traditional rulers. Essential dignity is the tradition's measure of how comfortable a planet is in a sign.
What Scorpio and Capricorn can make of it
How you meet
Scorpio and Capricorn sit two signs apart, a sextile — which Ptolemy (Tetrabiblos I.13) counts harmonious because both are yin, the receptive polarity. Fixed water meets cardinal earth: one of you holds depth and loyalty, the other structure and long patience. Mars, Scorpio's traditional ruler, is exalted in Capricorn, so effort here tends to find form rather than scatter.
Where it rubs
The friction is about what counts as real. Scorpio, fixed water (holding one emotional depth), reads undercurrents and wants the feeling named; Capricorn, cardinal earth (initiating in concrete terms), trusts what lasts and may file emotion away as unfinished business. Saturn, its ruler, has no dignity in Scorpio — no built-in ease. You can each translate, or wait to be guessed.
Day to day
Day to day, Scorpio and Capricorn often build quietly: few announcements, long memories, work that compounds. The sextile asks for a little initiative — two signs apart is friendly, not automatic, so someone has to suggest the plan. Shared ground is privacy and a dislike of waste. A good question between you: what are we protecting, and is it still what we want?

How we read this
This page uses the oldest systematic account of how signs relate: Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, book I, chapters 13 to 16 (2nd century). It covers the four aspects, the commanding and beholding pairs, and the disjunct signs. Ptolemy's reasons are astronomical (equal rising times, equal day lengths), so we read the commanding pairs as mirror images across an equinox and the beholding pairs across a solstice; Robbins's translation reads the mirror point as a sign instead. We give no score: a pairing of signs is a symbolic geometry, not a measurement.
What the evidence says
Large studies have tested whether sign pairings predict who marries or divorces. A study of Swedish population registers (Helgertz and Scott, 2020) and one of about ten million couples in the 2001 census of England and Wales (Voas, 2007) found no effect. Read this page as a way to talk about a relationship, not a forecast of it.
