Sagittarius and Capricorn
How Sagittarius and Capricorn relate in astrology's oldest systematic scheme, the facts behind it, and what two people might make of it.
Neighbours, with a classical link
Sagittarius and Capricorn sit next to each other, one sign apart. That is not one of Ptolemy's four aspects.
They are also linked as signs that behold each other: mirror images across a solstice, they give the Sun the same day lengths.

The two signs
| Sagittarius | Capricorn | |
|---|---|---|
| Element | Fire | Earth |
| Modality | Mutable | Cardinal |
| Polarity | Yang: outward, active | Yin: inward, receptive |
| Ruler | Jupiter | Saturn |
Each ruler in the other's sign
Jupiter, ruler of Sagittarius, in Capricorn: in its fall.
Saturn, ruler of Capricorn, in Sagittarius: no essential dignity.
Traditional rulers. Essential dignity is the tradition's measure of how comfortable a planet is in a sign.
What Sagittarius and Capricorn can make of it
How you meet
Sagittarius and Capricorn sit one sign apart, so classical astrology counts no aspect between you — though Ptolemy called them beholding signs: mirrored across the solstice, the Sun gives both the same day lengths. Sagittarius is fire that changes direction easily and wants more horizon; Capricorn is earth that starts things and wants them to hold. Curiosity runs both ways.
Where it rubs
Jupiter, ruling Sagittarius, is in fall in Capricorn — the expansive impulse finds less room in Saturn's territory of limits and cost. Yang fire wants the open question; yin earth wants the plan that holds. You can read each other as reckless or joyless, or you can trade information: what the risk is actually for, what the structure actually protects.
Day to day
Day to day, Sagittarius and Capricorn often run on different clocks — one improvising, one scheduling — though both take a long view: one by distance, one by duration. Saturn has no rulership, exaltation, detriment or fall in Sagittarius — no traditional stake there either way — so those terms stay open to negotiation. A question to sit with: who's holding the deadline right now, and why?

How we read this
This page uses the oldest systematic account of how signs relate: Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, book I, chapters 13 to 16 (2nd century). It covers the four aspects, the commanding and beholding pairs, and the disjunct signs. Ptolemy's reasons are astronomical (equal rising times, equal day lengths), so we read the commanding pairs as mirror images across an equinox and the beholding pairs across a solstice; Robbins's translation reads the mirror point as a sign instead. We give no score: a pairing of signs is a symbolic geometry, not a measurement.
What the evidence says
Large studies have tested whether sign pairings predict who marries or divorces. A study of Swedish population registers (Helgertz and Scott, 2020) and one of about ten million couples in the 2001 census of England and Wales (Voas, 2007) found no effect. Read this page as a way to talk about a relationship, not a forecast of it.
