Libra and Capricorn

How Libra and Capricorn relate in astrology's oldest systematic scheme, the facts behind it, and what two people might make of it.

Square

Libra and Capricorn sit three signs apart: a square. Ptolemy counts the square as disharmonious, because it joins signs of different kinds, one yang and one yin.

Venus, ruler of Libra, in Capricorn: no essential dignity.

Saturn, ruler of Capricorn, in Libra: exalted.

Traditional rulers. Essential dignity is the tradition's measure of how comfortable a planet is in a sign.

What Libra and Capricorn can make of it

How you meet

Libra and Capricorn both begin things — cardinal signs — so you often meet mid-plan, already moving. You're three signs apart: a square, which Ptolemy called disharmonious for joining yang air with yin earth. Still, Saturn, Capricorn's ruler, is exalted in Libra — a dignity, a placement of strength — so structure and fairness can genuinely like each other here.

Where it rubs

Three signs apart is a square, which Ptolemy (Tetrabiblos I.13) calls disharmonious: it links signs of unlike kinds — Libra's air is yang, outgoing; Capricorn's earth is yin, receptive. Libra's consulting may feel like stalling to Capricorn; Capricorn's deciding may feel like dismissal to Libra. Naming what a given moment asks for — more voices, or a call made — is yours to do.

Day to day

Daily rhythm here has two tempos: Libra weighing options aloud, Capricorn narrowing toward the workable. Shared ground is real — neither of you is passive, and both care how things are built. Worth asking each other: when I slow down to include you, does that land as respect or as drift? And when I decide, does it feel like relief or exclusion?

How we read this

This page uses the oldest systematic account of how signs relate: Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, book I, chapters 13 to 16 (2nd century). It covers the four aspects, the commanding and beholding pairs, and the disjunct signs. Ptolemy's reasons are astronomical (equal rising times, equal day lengths), so we read the commanding pairs as mirror images across an equinox and the beholding pairs across a solstice; Robbins's translation reads the mirror point as a sign instead. We give no score: a pairing of signs is a symbolic geometry, not a measurement.

What the evidence says

Large studies have tested whether sign pairings predict who marries or divorces. A study of Swedish population registers (Helgertz and Scott, 2020) and one of about ten million couples in the 2001 census of England and Wales (Voas, 2007) found no effect. Read this page as a way to talk about a relationship, not a forecast of it.
