Aries and Scorpio
How Aries and Scorpio relate in astrology's oldest systematic scheme, the facts behind it, and what two people might make of it.
Five signs apart, disjunct
Aries and Scorpio sit five signs apart. That is not one of Ptolemy's four aspects.
Ptolemy calls such signs disjunct, or alien: with no aspect and no other link between them, they are said not to see each other.
Source: Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos, book I, chapter 13, 16.
Later tradition
Later tradition, not Ptolemy, adds that both signs are ruled by Mars.
The two signs
| Aries | Scorpio | |
|---|---|---|
| Element | Fire | Water |
| Modality | Cardinal | Fixed |
| Polarity | Yang: outward, active | Yin: inward, receptive |
| Ruler | Mars | Mars (traditional), Pluto (modern) |
Each ruler in the other's sign
Mars, ruler of Aries, in Scorpio: at home there too (rulership).
Mars, ruler of Scorpio, in Aries: at home there too (rulership).
Traditional rulers. Essential dignity is the tradition's measure of how comfortable a planet is in a sign.
What Aries and Scorpio can make of it
How you meet
Aries and Scorpio sit five signs apart — a quincunx, which Ptolemy counts as no aspect at all, calling such signs disjunct: no built-in line of sight between you. Still, Mars rules both. Aries pushes outward, starting things and spending energy fast; Scorpio holds its position and takes everything inward. You may recognize each other's intensity while differing on what to do with it.
Where it rubs
Aries pushes in the open — cardinal fire, the outgoing yang polarity; Scorpio holds back, fixed water and receptive yin, deciding before it speaks. Five signs apart, a quincunx, Aries and Scorpio form none of Ptolemy's four aspects: signs said not to see each other. So clarity gets built on purpose — name the difference in pace, and ask what each of you needs.
Day to day
Daily life between Aries and Scorpio can run at two tempos: cardinal fire starts, fixed water deepens. Five signs apart, they form a quincunx — no classical aspect, what Ptolemy called disjunct, signs said not to see each other — though later tradition notes both answer to Mars. Both want stakes, not the lukewarm. When something stirs you, do you move now or wait to understand it, and who adapts?

How we read this
This page uses the oldest systematic account of how signs relate: Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, book I, chapters 13 to 16 (2nd century). It covers the four aspects, the commanding and beholding pairs, and the disjunct signs. Ptolemy's reasons are astronomical (equal rising times, equal day lengths), so we read the commanding pairs as mirror images across an equinox and the beholding pairs across a solstice; Robbins's translation reads the mirror point as a sign instead. We give no score: a pairing of signs is a symbolic geometry, not a measurement.
What the evidence says
Large studies have tested whether sign pairings predict who marries or divorces. A study of Swedish population registers (Helgertz and Scott, 2020) and one of about ten million couples in the 2001 census of England and Wales (Voas, 2007) found no effect. Read this page as a way to talk about a relationship, not a forecast of it.
