Cancer and Capricorn
How Cancer and Capricorn relate in astrology's oldest systematic scheme, the facts behind it, and what two people might make of it.
Opposition
Cancer and Capricorn sit six signs apart, facing each other across the zodiac: an opposition. Ptolemy counts the opposition as disharmonious.

The two signs
| Cancer | Capricorn | |
|---|---|---|
| Element | Water | Earth |
| Modality | Cardinal | Cardinal |
| Polarity | Yin: inward, receptive | Yin: inward, receptive |
| Ruler | Moon | Saturn |
Each ruler in the other's sign
Moon, ruler of Cancer, in Capricorn: in its detriment.
Saturn, ruler of Capricorn, in Cancer: in its detriment.
Traditional rulers. Essential dignity is the tradition's measure of how comfortable a planet is in a sign.
What Cancer and Capricorn can make of it
How you meet
Cancer and Capricorn sit six signs apart, in opposition — directly opposite points on the wheel. Both are cardinal, both yin: two receptive signs that still start things. One moves through care and mood, the Moon's territory; the other through structure and patience, Saturn's. The pull is recognition — each sees a competence the other has been carrying alone.
Where it rubs
Cancer's ruler, the Moon, is in detriment in Capricorn, and Saturn in detriment in Cancer: each sign's ruler sits awkwardly in the other's. That can sound like feelings called impractical and plans called cold. Ptolemy counts your opposition — the two signs six apart, facing each other across the zodiac — as disharmonious; you decide whether it means translation work or a standoff.
Day to day
Daily rhythm here runs on two clocks: one reads the emotional weather of the room, the other the shape of the week ahead. Shared ground is real — Cancer and Capricorn, facing each other across the zodiac, both build for the long haul and dislike waste. So put the question out loud: what does safety look like to each of you, and what would you need from the other to feel it?

How we read this
This page uses the oldest systematic account of how signs relate: Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, book I, chapters 13 to 16 (2nd century). It covers the four aspects, the commanding and beholding pairs, and the disjunct signs. Ptolemy's reasons are astronomical (equal rising times, equal day lengths), so we read the commanding pairs as mirror images across an equinox and the beholding pairs across a solstice; Robbins's translation reads the mirror point as a sign instead. We give no score: a pairing of signs is a symbolic geometry, not a measurement.
What the evidence says
Large studies have tested whether sign pairings predict who marries or divorces. A study of Swedish population registers (Helgertz and Scott, 2020) and one of about ten million couples in the 2001 census of England and Wales (Voas, 2007) found no effect. Read this page as a way to talk about a relationship, not a forecast of it.
