Aries and Aquarius

How Aries and Aquarius relate in astrology's oldest systematic scheme, the facts behind it, and what two people might make of it.

Sextile

Aries and Aquarius sit two signs apart: a sextile. Ptolemy counts the sextile as harmonious, because it joins signs of the same kind, both yang or both yin.

Each ruler in the other's sign

Mars, ruler of Aries, in Aquarius: no essential dignity.

Saturn, ruler of Aquarius, in Aries: in its fall.

Traditional rulers. Essential dignity is the tradition's measure of how comfortable a planet is in a sign.

What Aries and Aquarius can make of it

How you meet

Aries and Aquarius sit two signs apart — a sextile, which Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos reads as harmonious, since both signs share the yang, outgoing polarity. One is cardinal fire that starts things; the other fixed air that holds an idea steady. You often meet over a plan neither of you wanted to discuss slowly, and the ease between you is real without being effortless.

Where it rubs

Mars rules Aries, Saturn rules Aquarius, and Saturn is in fall in Aries — fall being the placement where a planet gets least support, so structure sits weakest in the sign of the fast start. Impatience may look like recklessness from one side, principle like stalling from the other. Neither reading is the whole story; name which is operating before deciding who adjusts.

Day to day

Day to day, Aries brings ignition and Aquarius brings the longer frame, and the sextile's two-sign gap means you have to reach slightly rather than assume. Fire acts, fixed air commits. A question worth asking each other: which of our current projects needs speed from us this week, and which needs us to leave it alone?

How we read this

This page uses the oldest systematic account of how signs relate: Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, book I, chapters 13 to 16 (2nd century). It covers the four aspects, the commanding and beholding pairs, and the disjunct signs. Ptolemy's reasons are astronomical (equal rising times, equal day lengths), so we read the commanding pairs as mirror images across an equinox and the beholding pairs across a solstice; Robbins's translation reads the mirror point as a sign instead. We give no score: a pairing of signs is a symbolic geometry, not a measurement.

What the evidence says

Large studies have tested whether sign pairings predict who marries or divorces. A study of Swedish population registers (Helgertz and Scott, 2020) and one of about ten million couples in the 2001 census of England and Wales (Voas, 2007) found no effect. Read this page as a way to talk about a relationship, not a forecast of it.
