Taurus and Scorpio
How Taurus and Scorpio relate in astrology's oldest systematic scheme, the facts behind it, and what two people might make of it.
Opposition
Taurus and Scorpio sit six signs apart, facing each other across the zodiac: an opposition. Ptolemy counts the opposition as disharmonious.

The two signs
| Taurus | Scorpio | |

Each ruler in the other's sign
Venus, ruler of Taurus, in Scorpio: in its detriment.
Mars, ruler of Scorpio, in Taurus: in its detriment.
Traditional rulers. Essential dignity is the tradition's measure of how comfortable a planet is in a sign.
What Taurus and Scorpio can make of it
How you meet
Taurus and Scorpio sit six signs apart: an opposition, the two standing at opposite ends of the circle, which Ptolemy counted as disharmonious. Both are fixed and yin, receptive and slow to shift. One of you works through earth and the tangible, the other through water and undercurrent — and Venus, ruling Taurus, and Mars, ruling Scorpio, each sit in detriment, ill at ease, in the other's sign.
Where it rubs
Venus, which rules Taurus, is in detriment in Scorpio — the sign opposite its home — and Mars, which rules Scorpio, is in detriment in Taurus: each ruler sits uneasy in the other's territory. Ptolemy counts your opposition, the signs 180° apart, as disharmonious. In practice, comfort may land as avoidance, intensity as pressure. You choose whether to translate or dig in.
Day to day
Two fixed signs build routines that last: Taurus sets the table, Scorpio notices what went unsaid at it. Shared ground is loyalty and a dislike of being rushed. The everyday risk is silence standing in for depth. Ask each other: what do you need me to say out loud that I assume you already know?

How we read this
This page uses the oldest systematic account of how signs relate: Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, book I, chapters 13 to 16 (2nd century). It covers the four aspects, the commanding and beholding pairs, and the disjunct signs. Ptolemy's reasons are astronomical (equal rising times, equal day lengths), so we read the commanding pairs as mirror images across an equinox and the beholding pairs across a solstice; Robbins's translation reads the mirror point as a sign instead. We give no score: a pairing of signs is a symbolic geometry, not a measurement.
What the evidence says
Large studies have tested whether sign pairings predict who marries or divorces. A study of Swedish population registers (Helgertz and Scott, 2020) and one of about ten million couples in the 2001 census of England and Wales (Voas, 2007) found no effect. Read this page as a way to talk about a relationship, not a forecast of it.
