Libra and Sagittarius
How Libra and Sagittarius relate in astrology's oldest systematic scheme, the facts behind it, and what two people might make of it.
Sextile
Libra and Sagittarius sit two signs apart: a sextile. Ptolemy counts the sextile as harmonious, because it joins signs of the same kind, both yang or both yin.
Source: Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos, book I, chapter 13.
The two signs
| Libra | Sagittarius | |
|---|---|---|
| Element | Air | Fire |
| Modality | Cardinal | Mutable |
| Polarity | Yang: outward, active | Yang: outward, active |
| Ruler | Venus | Jupiter |
Each ruler in the other's sign
Venus, ruler of Libra, in Sagittarius: no essential dignity.
Jupiter, ruler of Sagittarius, in Libra: no essential dignity.
Traditional rulers. Essential dignity is the tradition's measure of how comfortable a planet is in a sign.
What Libra and Sagittarius can make of it
How you meet
Two signs apart, Libra and Sagittarius form a sextile, which Ptolemy treats as harmonious on the grounds that both are yang — the outgoing, active polarity. Libra's cardinal air opens a question and weighs what would be fair; Sagittarius's mutable fire carries that opening somewhere wider. Between you, Venus's taste meets Jupiter's appetite for scope, and neither of you has to shrink.
Where it rubs
Libra wants the room balanced and consulted; Sagittarius says the blunt thing and moves on. Cardinal air keeps negotiating, mutable fire changes course mid-sentence, so plans can get agreed twice and kept once. Neither of you is the problem here. You can choose when honesty needs softening and when consensus is just delay, and name which one you're doing.
Day to day
Days with Libra and Sagittarius in them tend to fill up: invitations, half-formed trips, people worth introducing. Both of you lean outward toward the wider world — Libra through relationship, Sagittarius through conviction — and your signs sit a sextile apart, two signs, which Ptolemy counts as harmonious. When you disagree, do you want the fair answer or the true one?

How we read this
This page uses the oldest systematic account of how signs relate: Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, book I, chapters 13 to 16 (2nd century). It covers the four aspects, the commanding and beholding pairs, and the disjunct signs. Ptolemy's reasons are astronomical (equal rising times, equal day lengths), so we read the commanding pairs as mirror images across an equinox and the beholding pairs across a solstice; Robbins's translation reads the mirror point as a sign instead. We give no score: a pairing of signs is a symbolic geometry, not a measurement.
What the evidence says
Large studies have tested whether sign pairings predict who marries or divorces. A study of Swedish population registers (Helgertz and Scott, 2020) and one of about ten million couples in the 2001 census of England and Wales (Voas, 2007) found no effect. Read this page as a way to talk about a relationship, not a forecast of it.
