Taurus and Sagittarius
How Taurus and Sagittarius relate in astrology's oldest systematic scheme, the facts behind it, and what two people might make of it.
Five signs apart, disjunct
Taurus and Sagittarius sit five signs apart. That is not one of Ptolemy's four aspects.
Ptolemy calls such signs disjunct, or alien: with no aspect and no other link between them, they are said not to see each other.

The two signs
| Taurus | Sagittarius | |
|---|---|---|
| Element | Earth | Fire |
| Modality | Fixed | Mutable |
| Polarity | Yin: inward, receptive | Yang: outward, active |
| Ruler | Venus | Jupiter |
Each ruler in the other's sign
Venus, ruler of Taurus, in Sagittarius: no essential dignity.
Jupiter, ruler of Sagittarius, in Taurus: no essential dignity.
Traditional rulers. Essential dignity is the tradition's measure of how comfortable a planet is in a sign.
What Taurus and Sagittarius can make of it
How you meet
Five signs apart, Taurus and Sagittarius form a quincunx — in Ptolemy's scheme no aspect at all, two signs said not to see each other. That blankness leaves room for curiosity: fixed earth steadied by Venus meets mutable fire lit by Jupiter, and neither has a ready template for the other. You meet by asking rather than assuming.
Where it rubs
Taurus wants the plan to hold; Sagittarius wants the window left open. Fixed earth, yin and receptive, settles in; mutable fire, yang and outgoing, keeps moving. Five signs apart is a quincunx — not one of Ptolemy's four aspects, no classical link at all — so the friction rarely resolves into neat compromise. You can name each adjustment out loud, or let it collect as quiet irritation.
Day to day
Daily life here is a rhythm of settling and setting off: Taurus furnishing the shared ground, Sagittarius pointing past it. Venus rules Taurus, Jupiter rules Sagittarius, and neither holds dignity — classical strength or weakness — in the other's sign; tradition hands you no script for sharing a calendar. So ask: what does each of you need to feel unhurried, and to feel unconfined?

How we read this
This page uses the oldest systematic account of how signs relate: Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, book I, chapters 13 to 16 (2nd century). It covers the four aspects, the commanding and beholding pairs, and the disjunct signs. Ptolemy's reasons are astronomical (equal rising times, equal day lengths), so we read the commanding pairs as mirror images across an equinox and the beholding pairs across a solstice; Robbins's translation reads the mirror point as a sign instead. We give no score: a pairing of signs is a symbolic geometry, not a measurement.
What the evidence says
Large studies have tested whether sign pairings predict who marries or divorces. A study of Swedish population registers (Helgertz and Scott, 2020) and one of about ten million couples in the 2001 census of England and Wales (Voas, 2007) found no effect. Read this page as a way to talk about a relationship, not a forecast of it.
